MSPA President ~ William A. Moore
From The President's Desk
It is my great pleasure to begin the 53rd year of the New York City Middle School Principal’s Association as President. Our organization provides vital support, collaboration, teamwork and professional growth, as well as advocacy on behalf of middle schools of New York City.As Middle School Principals, we face many challenges. In an attempt to reach out to all of our members and to increase accessibility, we will be holding bi-monthly meetings simultaneously in each borough. Please watch for our announcements in the Principals’ Weekly. With the excitement of the new year, Chancellor Klein reminded us that we all play a crucial role in our students’ academic success. This brings to mind the opinions of middle schoolstudents about school. In “A Voice from the Middle”, a 2007 middle school student poll (www.nassp.org)* found that Middle School students are optimistic about their future. Ninety percent of the students polled felt they were very or somewhat prepared to succeed in their current school, and 85% felt that they were either very or somewhat prepared to succeed in high school. Ninety-two percent indicated that they will definitely or probably attend college and 93% said there was no chance that they would drop out of high school and not graduate. This optimism does not match what happens when middle school students reach high school and make important decisions about continuing their education in college or even finishing high school. They recommend that we provide middle-level students with an academic, social, and financial compass that will guide them through their educational journey. Our challenge is to remove all obstacles to their dreams. The Chancellor is making this possible by providing us with additional funds at the middle school level.I urge every middle level principal to take what we know and believe are best practices for supporting our staff and students, and share this information and/or experiences with us at ournext meeting.
